Best online hair loss treatment

Seven telehealth platforms that prescribe finasteride, dutasteride or minoxidil, scored on what they will actually write, how they screen, and what the full routine costs.

7 providers reviewed · updated

How we make money. We earn a commission when you start with some of the providers on this page, at no cost to you. It does not affect the order — with one exception that applies on this page and is disclosed rather than hidden: three providers score identically at 4.1, and the tiebreak printed below is historical earnings-per-click, which is what places Strut Health first among the three. Its entry says so in its own words. Everywhere else the money runs the other way: PeterMD has the largest review base here, pays us nothing at all, and places last.

How we scored them

Every provider is scored out of five against four criteria. The weighting is ours and you are welcome to disagree with it — that is why it is printed here rather than linked. It rewards breadth of what a platform will actually prescribe, because finasteride alone is where most of these companies stop and it is not where most hair loss ends.

What they will actually prescribe30%
Finasteride only, or dutasteride too; topical minoxidil only, or oral; and whether compounded combinations are available. Dutasteride for hair loss is off-label, and a platform that declines everything off-label has closed the door on the step after finasteride.
Screening and prescriber involvement25%
Whether the intake asks about previous finasteride exposure and sexual side effects, about plans to conceive, and about how far the loss has progressed — and whether a prescriber can be reached later. This is a drug people take for decades, and the first form is where the decades start.
Cost of the full routine25%
Not the entry price for one tablet, but what finasteride plus minoxidil plus anything else comes to monthly, and whether the figure survives the introductory period. Entry pricing on this page runs from $15 to $81 a month for treatments that are not all the same treatment.
Honesty about where it stops20%
Whether the platform is clear that medication preserves hair rather than restoring what is gone, and whether it refers out for transplant evaluation instead of selling another subscription. Every provider here is medication-only; not all of them say so.

Ties. Where two providers score identically, the one with the higher historical earnings-per-click is listed first. That is the only point at which commercial data touches the order, and it applies to ties only. On this page it decided the top position — Strut Health, Maximus and Roman all score 4.1 — and the first entry says so.

The ranking

  1. 1

    Strut Health

    Best overall

    4.1

    our score

The widest hair-loss catalogue on this page: finasteride at $20 a month, dutasteride, oral minoxidil and custom compounded formulas, with free consultations and free shipping. Three providers score 4.1 here and Strut is first among them only on the earnings tiebreak printed above — on merit it is level with Maximus and Roman, not ahead of them, and we would rather say that than let the position imply otherwise.

    Stands out for

    • Finasteride listed at $20 a month
    • Dutasteride and oral minoxidil both available
    • Custom compounded formulations; free consultation and shipping

    Not for you if

A 3.2-star Trustpilot average over 750 published reviews, with shipping delays and slow support the recurring complaints, and a three-to-seven day pipeline. On a daily medication where a gap in supply undoes months of progress, that is a real cost.

    Maximus

    Best value on dutasteride

    4.1

    our score

Finasteride, dutasteride and minoxidil from board-certified physicians starting at $24.99 a month, in all fifty states, with free priority shipping. It will write the off-label dutasteride prescription that most mass-market platforms decline, at close to mass-market pricing.

    Stands out for

    • Hair-loss treatment listed from $24.99 a month
    • Finasteride, dutasteride and minoxidil all prescribed
    • Board-certified prescribers, all fifty states, free priority shipping

    Not for you if

Three dollars a month more than Hims for plain finasteride, which is the only thing many men need. If you are not going to use the dutasteride option, you are paying a small premium for a door you will never open.

    Roman

Best price on a two-drug routine

    4.1

    our score

Daily finasteride and topical minoxidil together for $15 a month is the cheapest full routine on this page, and it comes with 8,400 published reviews, the largest prescriber network in men's telehealth and a free dermatology consult. Included and ranked on merit — our affiliate programme with Roman is unapproved, so this listing earns us nothing.

    Stands out for

    • Finasteride plus topical minoxidil listed at $15 a month
    • 8,400 published reviews, all fifty states
    • Free dermatology consultation and free shipping

    Not for you if

A generalist. There is no dutasteride, no oral minoxidil and no compounding, so the platform has nowhere to go if finasteride and topical minoxidil together are not enough. Subscription upsells stack across its other categories.

    Hims

    Best topical finasteride option

    4.0

    our score

A 0.3% finasteride and 6% minoxidil combined spray at $35 a month is the cleanest route for a man who wants the DHT blockade without a daily systemic tablet, and oral finasteride is $22 if he does. All fifty states, two-to-five day delivery, and the largest fulfilment operation here.

    Stands out for

    • Oral finasteride listed at $22 a month
    • Topical finasteride and minoxidil spray listed at $35 a month
    • All fifty states, two to five day delivery

    Not for you if

Finasteride and minoxidil only — no dutasteride, no oral minoxidil — and the intake is the highest-volume asynchronous model on this page, which is the wrong place to work through a previous bad experience on finasteride. Cancellation friction is the most-cited complaint against the brand.

    MangoRx

    Best all-in-one daily tablet

    4.0

    our score

One mint-flavoured chewable a day carrying finasteride, minoxidil, biotin and vitamin D3 replaces a tablet plus a topical plus two supplements. For a treatment whose single biggest failure mode is people stopping, collapsing the routine into one thing is a real clinical argument, not a gimmick.

    Stands out for

    • Four-in-one chewable listed at $81 for 30 days
    • Finasteride, minoxidil, biotin and vitamin D3 in one daily tablet
    • Same-day shipping

    Not for you if

The most expensive listing here at $81 a month, and nothing in it can be adjusted independently — you cannot change the minoxidil strength without changing the finasteride. Only five published reviews exist.

    DudeMeds

    Best single-drug subscription

    3.9

    our score

Prescription finasteride at $19 a month with the consultation, the shipping and the medication in one figure and nothing added on top. If finasteride alone is what you want, this is the least complicated way on this page to keep getting it.

    Stands out for

    • Finasteride listed at $19 a month, all inclusive
    • Free consultation and free shipping, all fifty states

    Not for you if

Four published reviews and one drug. No dutasteride, no minoxidil in any form, no combination product — which means no next step if finasteride alone stops holding the line.

    PeterMD

    Best bundled regrowth protocol

    3.9

    our score

Finasteride with the option to step up to the ReGenX combination bundle, under the same prescriber as its TRT and ED lines, with 13,882 published reviews behind the operation. Scores lowest here on our criteria despite the largest review base on the page.

    Stands out for

    • Finasteride listed at $60 for 30 days
    • ReGenX combination bundle available as a step up
    • 13,882 published reviews; free physician consultation

    Not for you if

At $60 for 30 days it is three to four times what Roman, DudeMeds, Strut Health or Hims list for the same generic finasteride, the 44-state footprint is the narrowest here, and turnaround is the slowest at five to seven days.

Frequently asked questions

Do you earn money from these recommendations?
Yes, from some of them, at no additional cost to you, and on this page the disclosure needs one extra sentence. Three providers score 4.1, and the tiebreak — historical earnings-per-click — is what put Strut Health first among them; its entry says so in its own text rather than letting the position do the talking. Below the ties, the order runs against the money: PeterMD has the largest review base on the page, pays us nothing, and places last, while Roman also pays us nothing and places third. Scoring happens against the printed criteria before any commercial consideration.
How long before hair loss medication works?
Longer than most people expect, and the label says so outright. The finasteride 1 mg prescribing information states that "In general, daily use for three months or more is necessary before benefit is observed." It also states that withdrawal of treatment leads to reversal of effect within twelve months — so this is not a course you finish, it is a medication you keep taking. Judging a provider on whether you see results in week six is judging the wrong thing; judge it on whether it will still be easy to get a refill in year three.
Should an online provider prescribe dutasteride for hair loss?
It can, but you should know what you are agreeing to. Dutasteride is approved in the United States for benign prostatic hyperplasia, not for androgenic alopecia, so prescribing it for hair is off-label — a legitimate clinical decision a licensed prescriber is entitled to make, and not the same thing as an approved indication. Strut Health and Maximus both list it; Hims, Roman, DudeMeds and MangoRx do not. A platform that offers it should be telling you it is off-label at the point it offers it.
Why is Sesame Care not on this list?
Because we cannot describe what it would be selling you. Sesame Care scores 4.3 in our directory, which would have placed it first, but that rating was written about a general-purpose booking marketplace and inherited into every category the company is tagged with. For hair loss the directory records no medication list and no price — "Hair Loss" appears among its services and nothing else does. Putting a best-overall award on an offer we cannot state the contents of is exactly what a ranked page should not do, so it is named here instead. It still appears on the hair-loss provider hub, where nothing is ranked.
Is the cheapest option on this page actually the cheapest?
Roman at $15 a month is the lowest full-routine price here and it covers both finasteride and topical minoxidil, which is more than the $19, $20 and $22 single-drug listings from DudeMeds, Strut Health and Hims include. Compare what is in the box rather than the headline: MangoRx at $81 a month carries four ingredients in one tablet, and PeterMD at $60 for 30 days carries the same single generic finasteride that three providers here list under $25. The routine, not the entry price, is the comparable unit.
What should the intake ask before prescribing finasteride?
Whether you have taken it before and how you tolerated it, whether you are trying to conceive, and how far the loss has actually gone. The first matters because a minority of men report persistent sexual side effects and an async form will not surface that unless it asks. The second matters because finasteride affects DHT-dependent sperm parameters. The third matters because finasteride preserves hair rather than restoring it — on a fully bare crown there is very little left to preserve, and the honest answer is a transplant evaluation, which no provider on this page offers.

Educational reference, not medical advice. Which provider suits you depends on your labs and your history — that is a conversation with a clinician, not a ranking.
